Paint Standards

Painting Tips

  1. Move all furniture and room cabinets away from paint area.  Cover all furniture and cabinets with painter’s plastic or other protective cloth.

  2. Use drop cloths and masking paper rolls to protect carpets and floors.

  3. Clean and patch all areas prior to painting.

  4. Tape off all paint edges.

  5. Stir paint with stirring stick or power driven spiral mixer before using.

  6. Use paint can pour spout to avoid getting paint in lid lip.

  7. Use paint pails and paint pail liners.  A magnet inside the paint pale is useful for holding brushes.

  8. Soak brushes in water and shake excess water out before using with paints.  This makes cleaning brushes much easier. (Do not do this with paint rollers.)  Paint brushes should be considered reusable when cleaned unless it has been used multiple times.

  9. When rolling paint, use a 3/8” nap for all internal walls.  Paint rollers are considered as disposable.  Do not attempt to clean rollers after use.

  10. Do not leave paint cans uncovered.  Always place a lid on the can when not using it.

  11. Wrap paint brushes and rollers in plastic trash or shopping bags and place in a shaded area when taking a break from painting. This keeps the paint from drying.

  12. Accidents happen!  Clean up all spills and drips from floors as soon as they occur.  Use a 409-type cleaner for minor spills on carpet and tiles.

  13. Clean up all paint brushes and other tools. Shake out excess water.  Never leave tools to dry in water pools to avoid rust buildup.

It is not unusual to have volunteers participate in painting classrooms and other areas of the church.  Please print the attached CVCC Painting Tips and review the contents with volunteers.
